Reviews of PureGym Cambridge Leisure Park

I write this review after having been a member of this gym for over two years now. Most important factor first: the gym is incredibly busy from about 4pm until at least 7pm each weekday. In my mind it's not usable at these times. This was not the case two years ago when I joined - I could easily get to the gym after work around 4 and do a full workout without too much hassle. Now, almost every piece of equipment is in use in the evenings, and a workout would take twice as long. I bit the bullet a couple of months ago and moved my workout to mornings (starting 6.30 - 7am). Most equipment is available at this time, but there are still quite a few people around so waiting is sometimes still necessary. I sometimes wonder at what point they'll stop accepting new memberships? Weekends are typically fine, particularly in the mornings. In terms of equipment, the gym is well equipped with cardio machines, free weights (dumb bells and bar bells), and machines. The range of weights is great, there are incline and decline benches, two cross-over cable machines, chin up bars etc. However, there are no proper lifting mats for power lifting. You can use the standard flooring, but it's soft and not really appropriately for large weights. Free lockers are provided, but BYO small lock. Even when it's really busy, I have always found a spare locker. I notice a couple of other reviewers comment on cleanliness. I don't find the place spotless, but I certainly see staff regularly cleaning all parts of the gym and generally it's well kept. I find it a bit icky that gym towels aren't used by anyone, and there's no facilities to wipe down benches/machines after use (e.g. paper towels and spray bottles), so it's not uncommon to find something covered in someone else's sweat. No soap is provided in the showers, but I take a big squirt of the hand soap near the loos, and use that instead. All staff I have interacted with have been extremely friendly and helpful. From what I have seen of their training sessions, they also look like great trainers (though I have never had a session myself). One minor complaint about trainers -- it's not uncommon for the trainers to use multiple pieces of equipment (whether for a group or an individual), which sometimes blocks the use of commonly used weights from being used for really long periods of time. I find this a bit frustrating if e.g. a dumb bell set is only being used for 30 seconds every 10 minutes for training, especially considering how busy the gym and how precious each set of weights is. (And sometimes I find the trainers with groups are the culprits who do not return the weights after use.) Overall, I recommend this gym if you plan to go outside of post-work hours. I'm not sure about now, but when I joined two years ago it was also the cheapest in the area.
